Ingredients
  

  • 1 block of extra-firm tofu pressed and cut into thick "steaks"
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil / sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs for garnish optional

Instructions
 

  • In a shallow dish, whisk together balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, soy sauce, olive oil, garlic powder, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper to create the marinade.
  • Place the tofu steaks in the marinade, ensuring they are well coated on all sides. Let them marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight in the refrigerator for best results.
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Remove the tofu steaks from the marinade, reserving any excess marinade for later use.
  • Place the tofu steaks on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and slightly crispy on the outside.
  • While the tofu is baking, transfer the remaining marinade to a small saucepan and simmer over medium heat until it thickens into a glaze, about 5 minutes.
  • Once the tofu is done baking, brush the glaze over the tops of the tofu steaks and garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
